The MRF
|
|
|
Miami University's Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is responsible for collecting,
sorting, and processing trash and recyclables from all academic buildings, including the
residence halls and dining facilities. The MRF recently opened in August of 2003 as an
updated facility being much bigger, cleaner, and more efficient than the previous. The
construction was made possible in part by grants from the Ohio Department of Natural
Resources.

|
The MRF collected almost 12,000 yards of recyclables in 2004,
that's nearly 100 football fields of materials that were saved from going to the landfill.

Our friends at the MRF collect the materials and separate them into paper, cardboard,
plastic, glass, and aluminum. They also take out anything that can not be recycled.
Then the plastic bottles are crushed, the glass broken into pieces… and all the broken
down materials are collected and bundled to be sent out to companies who use them to make
new products.
