Recycling History


Miami University has long been supporting and promoting sustainability and sound environmental practices through its academic programs and plant operations.

  • 1989 - Miami University initiates the Recycling Program

  • 1990 - "Miami Recycles" is established

  • 1992 - MRF works wonders at Miami with 40% waste reduction, saving about $60,000 in disposal fees

  • 1994 - Coordination with Goodwill Industries aids in another successful year

  • 1996 - Recycling efforts save $80,000 (cardboard recovery increases 244% over the previous year)

  • 1998 - Recycling named official Waste Management Program

  • 1999 - Residence Hall students contribute to recycling success - 18.8 tons worth $1,165

  • 2000 - ?Miami Recycles? sets a new recycling record with more than $180,000 worth savings in landfill fees

  • 2001 - ?Recycle Mania? happens! MU beats OU at the inter-school recycling competition. MU also initiates an ?intra-school? contest with the different residence halls

  • 2002 - MU participates in ?Recycle Mania? for a consecutive second year, along with OU, Bowling Green & Harvard

  • 2003 - ?Recycle Mania? up to 8 participating schools!

  • 2003 - Building Service workers switched to using microfibers in building maintenance. This means less water use, less chemical use, a more sanitary environment, and waste reduction.

  • 2004 - Miami wins RecycleMania out of 17 participating universities nationwide! 2.4 millions pounds were recycled total and Miami recycled 58.28 lbs/person.

  • 2006 - Miami introduces Unplugged!, an on-campus energy reduction competition. Total, there was a 27% energy reduction which saved the university $42,912.00.

  • 2008 - RecycleMania climbs to 400 participating colleges and universities.

  • 2008 - Green-cleaning products are implemented during March in building maintenance. Not only is this more friendly for the environment but also for employees and residents.
